As a child of the 80's/90's I am often taken aback by how much the world has changed in such a short time.
With this in mind I give you my list of seven everyday items we did not have when I was a child.
1. The Internet.
We didn't have a computer at home until I was about 14 and it didn't have the internet. I think my parents finally got the internet at home in the early 00's!
2. Laptop Computers.
My first computer was a huge great clunky thing, with a big fat monitor and a huge tower. I now write this blog post on an 11.5 inch laptop computer.
3. Smart phones/Tablets/ebook readers.
Talking about shrinking technology, it kind of blows my mind that I can now carry the whole internet and every book I ever want to read in my back pocket!
4. Drive through Coffee.
Coffee was something that was drunk at home, out of mugs. Now there is a coffee shop on every corner.
This has to be my favourite progression, I can even get coffee without having to ever get out of my car now, thanks to drive through coffee shops!
5. Car Seats.
Long gone, thank goodness, are the days of six kids laying down on cushions in the van or three to a seat belt. We are better educated these days and life is safer. There are now laws about the type of car seat that must be used at what age.
My niece has a fantastic car seat, it allows her to rear face, forward face and it swivels to allow her parents to easily lift her in and out! My brother's (her dad) car seat was a polystyrene shell with a fancy fabric cover!
6. Sunday Shopping.
In the village near where I grew up the shops ALWAYS closed on a Sunday and they had half day closing on a Wednesday. I remember the large department store fighting a legal battle in order to be allowed to open on Sundays. It was a really big deal, got a lot of press coverage and eventually they won. It was so exciting.
7. Twenty Four Hour shopping.
I will never forget the sheer wonder at going shopping in the middle of the night. We went to Asda in a town about 30 minutes away from our house and we brought crisps! Nowadays I wouldn't think twice about nipping out to the supermarket if I run out of milk for my coffee when pulling an all night writing session.
And there you have it folks, seven things this 90's kid didn't have growing up!
Thanks for dropping by xx
